The Urban Tour Group is proud to provide a group of competent and well-trained guides who conduct walking tours of Downtown Portland. It is also the expectation of our insurance provider that our guides are trained in safety and emergency procedures. The following information explains the UTG Retraining Policy.
Members of UTG who are conducting tours are responsible for retraining every five years. Guides who have switched tours during the past five years and are scheduled to retrain are not exempt from the UTG retraining requirements. Associate/Life members who wish to conduct tours or be available to substitute must also fulfill the retraining requirements.
A guide has a two-year window of opportunity to take the retraining seminar.
Retraining Requirements:
- Attend a one-half day seminar
- Complete two shadow tours, of which at least one must be with their assigned tour group.
- A guide has one year from the date of attending the training seminar to complete the two shadow tours.
- All proof of shadowing must be submitted to the current Retraining Chair.
Inactive Status
Active guides with less than ten years of membership who are unable to complete the retraining in the allotted time, will become inactive in status until they have completed the retraining activities.
Active guides with less than ten years of membership may be inactive for no more than two consecutive touring seasons.
Active guides with ten or more years of membership and Associate/Life members who have not completed the retraining requirements in the allotted time will be asked to go on Associate/Life Non-touring status.
