This is the oldest surviving building in downtown Portland and the start of Portland’s large inventory of cast-iron buildings.   Today Portland’s inventory of cast-iron bluings  are second only to New York City.

The Hallock McMillan Bldg. was one of the first buildings to use brick construction and cast iron elements.   The name is derived from its designer, Portland’s first professional architect, Absolom Hallock and William McMillan the contractor.

In the 1940s the building was remodeled” to something more modern.   Cast-iron features were removed, the brick exterior was covered in stucco, a corner entrance was created.

In 2025, the building has been almost completely returned to its 1857 appearance by the owner, John Russell.

The original ornamental elements covered by stucco have been replicated and new cast-iron pillars were created from original drawings.

The building has seen many different uses overtime – candy factory, offices and longshoremen hiring hall.
